Mrauk-U is now my favorite place in Myanmar when I thought nothing could beat Bagan. You will not get tired of Pagodas here as the experience of cycling on those bumpy streets it’s already enough to make you love this place. I went from Mrauk-U to Yangon by bus.
I wouldn’t mind staying longer in this place, but I need to move on, knowing that the way back will be the same as the way in. Can’t believe I will have to cross this street again! The ride from Mrauk-U to Yangon is worse than the one from Bagan to Mrauk-U. It takes longer, about 21 hours, and it’s cheaper. Yes, It’s true. As I told before, I think that the ticket from Bagan to Mrauk-U is so expensive due to the fact that we were on this “truck” for 1 hour.
The way back is worse cause you are doing it during day time. We depart in the morning and arrive at Yangon around 6 am. The fact that is during the day makes it worse because I can’t fall asleep, so I’m feeling all the bumps and curves in a serious way. I seriuosly got sick, but fortunately didn’t need to throw up, or any other passenger on the bus. I know other travelers that weren’t the same luck. It’s hard to imagine how it feels to go on a curvy street for 8 hours like this one from Mrauk-U to Yangon, so only after experiencing it, you can tell.
My only wish at some point was to never get back in that bus in the next hours. I was feeling like shit. But again, totally worthy! Would do it again just to visit Mrauk-U and its people.
The bus journey was ok, without problems, but full of bumps of course, once you are out of the mountain, the street that connects Yangon isn’t so bad. Once again we needed to stop several times for passport control.
Once I reach Yangon bus station that is still kind of far from the city center, I immediately have people trying to take me to the city, so it’s not a problem to find a taxi to the center. I was on a shared taxi that costs around 10K. It’s half an hour car ride, it still quite far.
This is my second time in Yangon, the place I liked less in Myanmar, but actually this time I enjoyed it a lot. And this is the reason why people you meet matter. On the first time in the city, I met no one, but this time I met lots of people and truly enjoyed my days in the city that is chaotic for a bike rider like me.
