A nice program for your stay in Krabi is kayaking at Railay Beach, a wonderful spot to do so. I went with a few friends there to kayak for the first time in my life.
To get from Ao Nang to Railay Beach you need to go on a long tail boat. This is not a problem as they are departing very frequently from Ao Nang. The ride is cheap and the view on the way to Railay Beach is a delight. We are crossing lots of wonderful limestone cliffs, so just the boat ride was already exciting.
Railay Beach is not so far from Ao Nang, but the best way to reach it is really by boat. We were coming here with the purpose of kayak and that’s what we did. There are many offers of kayak and canoe renting and you pay by the hour. We were 5 and rented 2 kayaks for 2 hours. It was kind of cheap for the fun. I had never kayaking before so I was relying on my two partners to get through this alive. Actually, it is pretty easy as long as we are all coordinated. We rent the kayak and we have 2 hours to do whatever we want and explore the way we want.
Kayaking among all those limestone cliffs and that crystal clear water is an amazing experience. We could see some fishes along the way. Eventually, we stopped on a tiny desertic beach we found in the middle of the tall rocks. There was no one else there, and there was no space for sunbaths. It was just a quick stop to relax, swim and snorkel. The water here has a different color. It is looking like a soft beautiful tone of green. It is an enchanting place to hide a bit from the sun.
One of the guys of the group had already been there and remembered there was a cave full of penis, so we were looking for the penises cave. Finally, we reach it accidentally.
The name of this place is Princess cave that stands next to Phra Nang Beach and this beach is just awesome! We parked the kayaks at the beach and went for a walk to see around. This beach has a huge beautiful limestone cliff just next to it with several stalactites and stalagmites. It is a wonderful view from this beach. There are a lot of tourists here swimming, snorkeling, having sunbaths or even climbing the rocks that surround this isolated beach. One of the caves among the rocks is Princess Cave or the temple of fertility, which is fully decorated with penises. Penises of all sizes, materials, shapes… just penises and more penises there is a pill of them. This place is sacred so no touching is allowed. Those penises are offerings from the fisherman to the princess. Some fishermen do still come here to make offerings objects believed to help with fertility.
Those fishermen say the cave is the home of a mythical sea princess, believe their offerings will bring them success in their fishing and protect them from danger.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t stay for a long time as we needed to return the kayaks soon. We had lunch in Railay and stand there for the rest of the day enjoying the wonderful weather in Thailand. This isn’t such a good place for snorkeling… but instead of fish, I was checking some tiny sand crabs by the end of the day. There were a lot of them creating a unique pattern on the sand. They actually do sand balls while filtering the sand to get some food, and then they leave the filtered balls behind creating a circular pattern around their hole. I had never seen this spectacle in my life so I got very enthusiastic.
For the sunset, we returned to Ao Nang.
