Phu Quoc is the most famous Vietnam island and doesn’t lack attractions and different things to do either on the island or around it. There are several smaller islands around that look beautiful and I decided to explore them too, So during my days on Phu Quoc island I actually spent 2 of them outside the main island. There are Phu Quoc tours available to the nearby islands and I chose the one that seemed more beautiful to me.
Day tour to May Rut Trong
I have done a tour of May Rut Trong that included more stops rather than the island itself. At first, I actually thought to camp on this Vietnam island because it is possible, but not on your own. You must join a tour, and the price was not that appealing to me, so instead, I decided to visit May Rut Trong on a day trip from Phu Quoc island. I’m glad I made that decision cause May Rut Trong is truly small. There is nothing more than a beach to explore, and the beach is not that big.
But first things first. I booked this Vietnam island tour with my hostel receptionist for 650K dong. The tour is with John’s Tours which is apparently the most popular company operating tours in Phu Quoc.
The tour includes pick-up at the hotel, 2 snorkeling stops, lunch on board the boat, and a visit to May Rut Trong.
So, from Duong Dong, the bus will be picking up several clients along the way because we hop on the boat on the very south of the island at An Thoi pier. This is where the tour boat departs from. It took more than 30 minutes to get there. The bus had to cross some narrow streets and it was chaotic!
Once at An Thoi pier, we change to the big boat that will be touring us around this Vietnam island that day. After waiting several minutes we finally depart heading to the 1st snorkeling spot. They provide snorkeling gear at your own responsibility. You lose it, you pay for it.
The 1st snorkeling spot was really good! Beautiful colorful coral gardens that were extending for significant distances. This spot was next to a rock somewhere near Gam Ghi Island. Really good. It was the best one. They say it is the largest coral reef in Phu Quoc.
The second snorkeling spot was actually not that amazing. It was right in front of Buom Island and there were not many fish. The waters were pretty cold in both spots. The time that was given to us to snorkel was enough, not rushing.
After spending the morning snorkeling we had a huge meal on board. There were several traditional Vietnamese dishes with yummy food. What a feast. There were lots of food!
After lunch, we went to May Rut Trung island where we could do whatever we wanted until it was time to leave. We spent about 1 h there and returned at 3.30 pm so we arrived at our hotels at about 5 pm.
I was very excited about this Vietnam island cause I saw some beautiful pictures of it, but the weather was so moody that I’m sure I didn’t see the true beauty of the place. The beach was still beautiful and even with very cloudy weather, the water looked amazing and crystal clear. I can only imagine under the sun. Must be worth it.
The island had actually many people. There is only one beach and it is not that wide. There was a place where you could buy drinks and food but not much more. There is nothing to do on this island haha
Vietnamese were 95% of the people there. The girls would be taking pictures with locals that made photography a business… There was one man with a drone taking pictures of girls on a board and there was another one with a professional camera taking pictures of them on a swing. They found a business there haha. If there is one thing Vietnamese girls like to do is take pictures so they pay these guys that tell them how to pose, etc.. weird the least…
Anyway, here the water temperature was actually pleasant. I’m not sure if the place offers good snorkeling areas because the snorkeling gear was borrowed for specific activities, not on May Rut Trong. So I didn’t have a snorkeling mask with me and can not tell about having that experience in May Rut Trong. It was really disappointing to have that weather. It would be way more thrilling to see the island’s true colors. So when you choose to make this tour, make sure you go on a sunny day, as you will be way more enchanted by Vietnam island natural beauty.
At the right time, we went back to the boat on a journey back and this is how I spent my day. Even had time to go to the beach for sunset after arriving at the hotel.
