Phu Quoc Sao Beach and Khem beach

I stayed in Phu Quoc for about 10 days and I split my stay between different places. My original idea was to split it into the north, center, and south so I could cover a major part of the territory, but the north didn’t seem like a place to stay, mostly because there were no budget options to sleep in the area. This way I decided to spend most part of my stay in Duong Dong the only area on the island that has hostels and the most lively part of Phu Quoc. But, I also stayed in the south of the island for 3 nights to explore the south beaches that seem to have the best reputation, like Phu Quoc Sao Beach.

There is no such thing as public transportation on the island, so the only way I found to move from Duong Dong to An Thoi area was to rent a motorbike in town for some days and take it with me to the south which is approximately 30km away.

The street to get to An Thoi was good and the ride was smooth. Traffic gets a bit more crowded where the hotel is, but it was still fine. This is the area where the tour boats depart from, and it is also a busy side of Phu Quoc, but only for locals. I didn’t see any foreigner on these streets while being there. Only on the beaches nearby, that was the purpose of my move here.

Phu Quoc Sao Beach

The most known beach is Phu Quoc Sao Beach, so I definitely wanted to check it out. I dedicated a full day to staying on Phu Quoc Sao Beach, a very beautiful beach with restaurants around and water inflatables for kids and other water activities. This was the busiest beach I visited in Phu Quoc, but even being the busiest doesn’t make it an overcrowded beach at all. Phu Quoc Sao beach is quiet and pretty with some photogenic coconut trees and an area a bit further with very shallow waters in orangy tones. Pretty cool here. It was where I spent most part of my time because no one was around and I could enjoy a lot of calmness for me. The sunset at Phu Quoc Sao beach was nice as it was just behind some coconut trees. So charming!

Phu Quoc Khem Beach

Another of my days in Phu Quoc was spent at Khem Beach which is not that far from Phu Quoc Sao Beach so you can actually visit both on the same day, but as I had a lot of time, I decided to dedicate one day for each. Khem Beach is less crowded than Sao Beach but it is beautiful as well. There were not many people here and not many things for sale such as food or water activities. The beach is very wide with some sort of castle-like building in the distance by the beach. Again, a sight that doesn’t match Vietnam that much in my mind. This beach has an area filled with coconut trees that provide much-needed shade. Really nice here.

From Khem Beach, I wanted to go all the way south to the southernmost part of the island, but the street I decided to ride to make my way there was unaccessible I’m not sure why. There were two security guys on the street that didn’t allow me to proceed. What a shame cause I was very excited to go there as there seemed to be a cool sandbank overlooking other nearby islands. I had to make another plan for my sunset. I decided to go to the place where the fishermen lived.

Bai Xep beach

I think not many foreigners go there as everybody was staring and very admired to see me sitting there on the sand watching the sunset among them, their trash, and their dogs. This place was actually a cool found cause the cable car is just in front and makes the scenery even more particular, which I like. This is not the beach where you go for a swim! It is where locals have their homes and fishing boats. It is the spot seen from the cable car right at the beginning of the trip to Hon Thom.

In the south of the island, I stayed at a hotel named Y Thu Guest House and the place had a great rooftop. It was the tallest building around, so the views from it were great! I could see the cable car from the rooftop and the sea.

After spending 3 nights there I went all the up to Duong Dong again to spend a few more days.
On my way north I tried to visit some beaches including Sunset Sanato which has some pretty cool statues on the beach but the access was private and paid so I decided to skip it. Maybe I tried to get in from the wrong spot, but this area seems to be pretty blocked to access the beach. I saw huge resorts and reaching the beach seemed to be impossible, so I think this area is not worth a try.

Bai Dat Do

But, on my way north I stopped for a bit to admire the viewpoint of Bai Dat Do, the beach next to Sunset Town on the way north. There is a beach here but just like Bai Xep Beach it’s the place where local fishermen live, therefore, it is not the beach where you would go for a swim and a sunbath.

Ba Keo beach

But I stopped closer to Duong Duong where there is a beach near the airport and you can see the planes flying very low. There was absolutely no one here at Ba Keo Beach. I stopped near the Pearl farm to watch the airplanes and enjoy the beach all by myself. There were some trees providing shade so it was my spot for the day. There was also a nice beach bar but it was closed.

I dedicated another day in Phu Quoc to another place on the island that gives Europe vibes. But this one literally screams Venice!! haha It is Grand World Phu Quoc.
