On this day, I went with my Ympek to Mandalay Hill. It’s about a 35 min bicycle ride from Ostello Bello, but as the previous day we had a wild party at the Hostel, I was feeling tired and just went out for the sunset. Yes, Ostello Bello is known for the best parties in town and even guests from other hostels come here to have fun. This time we had a pijama party.
Really close to Mandalay Hill is the Sanda Muni Pagoda, that I have visted before, but couldn’t resist to stop for a photo with Ympek on the scenario.
There are a lot of stairs from the very bottom until the top of Mandalay Hill. It can take about 30 min to climb, but the view is much worthy. You get a 360 degrees view to all the city and you can see how many temples and pagodas surround the area! What an incredible sight and impressive, as when you are down there surrounded by the pagodas you can’t understand the full dimension of the place.
On the way up I find a lonely monk sitting on a bench and he starts a conversation. That’s one of the reasons why you should visit Mandalay Hill, besides of the view: the contact with locals. Also on the first time I visited it in March, I had this direct contact with students trying to practise and get help with english. This time, the purpose of the conversation is the same, practise English and in reverse I have a nice conversation with this lovely monk and get to know more about this Monk life, Mandalay and Myanmar itself. We went until the top while talking about life and how this monk lives. Actually he is not a monk, he is a novice. You can only be a monk after 20 years old.
We stay to watch the sunset when the exact same guy with whom I have talked in March appears. That was such a funny coincidence. I believe he is there all the time for sunset to get some tourists for his tours, just like it happened when I visited this place for the first time. Once again he wasn’t lucky with me…
Mandalay hill is a place with many tourists for the sunset, that’s why many locals come to practise english or get clients, because they know the foreigners will be there for sunset. It was a fun day!
On the way back it was already totally dark, and I’m the only one going to the very bottom. There is no one else in that path at the same time. I even find a trench of the way without light, so I needed to use my phone to light up the stairs and see where I’m putting my feet. At that moment I’m thinking to myself that probably I shouldn’t be there… But everything was ok.
I loved to visit Mandalay Hill, and if I’m back to Mandalay again in the future I will go there again for sure.
