Bangkok Chinatown and Portuguese neighborhood

While in Bangkok I visited Bangkok Chinatown once more and the Portuguese neighborhood for the first time.

Portuguese neighborhood aka Soi Kudeejeen

It’s amazing the fact that I have been to Bangkok for a significant amount of times but never dared to visit the Portuguese neighborhood in the city. It was about time. I decided to visit the area which has a church, some old typical houses, and even a museum dedicated to Portuguese history and influence in Thailand, more specifically Bangkok. The museum was free and a wonderful find because it tells so much about the Portuguese, how they helped the Thai people fight the Burmese, and how they were left with this neighborhood for the descendants of the Portuguese back then. For me, this museum was very interesting and I learned many interesting things about my country’s history. There were also some restaurants with Portuguese flags stating they had Portuguese food. I was hoping it was for real, but the food is not the typical Portuguese at all haha. Surely it is a mix of influences. Portuguese were the first Europeans arriving in Thailand so it is interesting to see how things developed. The narrow cute streets of the neighborhood are also delightful.

Santa Cruz Church

The neighborhood is called Soi Kudeejeen and Santa Cruz church is one of the cool buildings seenable from the river trip that I had done a few days before, completely oblivious that the church was part of the Portuguese neighborhood.

On this day I walked a lot to visit more things I have seen from the boat ride I have done when I visited IconSiam. I saw this tall white stupa not far from Santa Cruz Church so I walked to find it, as well as this Chinese temple seen from the river.

So first, I found the white stupa or Wat Prayurawongsawat Worawihan. It is a nice white very tall stupa with some other temples around, but I have seen lots of temples in Bangkok so it was nice to see, but I moved on pretty quickly.

Guan Yu Shrine (Klong San)

My next stop on this walk was Guan Yu Shrine (Klong San), a Chinese temple that gathered a lot of attention. Lots of people were visiting it. It stands just next to the river and is as colorful as Chinese temples can be. Beautiful with a nice river view and surely worth a visit if you are nearby.

Wat Phitchaya Yatikaram

Next was Wat Phitchaya Yatikaram, this beautiful peaceful white temple that seems not to have many foreign visitors. I thought the temples were beautiful with white and gold tones and these “Guardians” with perfect dreamy colors OMG. The most beautiful “Guardians” statues, the colors were just on point. In general, I loved the quietness of this temple and the peace the light colors transmitted. Was a nice find.

From here I walked all the way to IconSiam. This day was spent walking as the Portuguese neighborhood is quite far from the shopping mall. I ended my day exhausted but I believe that walking the streets of a city is a great way of meeting the reality behind the touristy spots. I love walking and Bangkok is walking-friendly, so I enjoy this type of tiring but rewarding day.- I wouldn’t take so many random pictures if I didn’t walk all day long haha.

Bangkok Chinatown

This was not my first time visiting Bangkok Chinatown, but it was the first time I spent hours walking across it and near it. This area of Bangkok is just so photogenic! I love the mix of old tones with the bright colors and messy electric wires everywhere that give such a charm to each picture. Love strolling around this area!

Chinatown Gate

To start I came across the Chinatown gate with the Golden Buddha Temple on the back, a temple I have never visited inside as it is paid.

Talat Noi

From here I walked to this street called Talat Noi. Basically, this is a cute small street filled with street art and photogenic corners. There isn’t much to do here besides looking at the walls haha, literally. Nearby there was a temple called Rong Kueak Shrine that is beautifully placed next to the river but offers no nice river view. This is one thing I don’t like about Bangkok. Sometimes is very hard to find a spot with a river view to enjoy the breeze. River access isn’t possible in many places and there isn’t much for a nice river walk to be done honestly.

Antique turtle car

Anyway, from this temple I kept on walking until the Antique turtle car which is basically an old car in a vintage scenery looking charming, next to this Big Buddha tree trapped in colorful fabrics- holy tree, therefore. I was confused about why is this even marked as an attraction on the map, and where is the turtle

Didn’t understand the place honestly, but walking around is cool cause the architecture is a delight for me. I love the old houses and even stopped near one that I’m sure was playing Burmese music. I even stopped to record the song on my phone and have memories of it (I have a Burmese playlist that’s why I think I can recognize it).

Wat Mangkon

My next stop in Bangkok Chinatown was Wat Mangkon Kamalawat, a temple I hadn’t visited before. There is a metro station with the same name and this temple seemed to be popular. It was under renovation when I visited so I didn’t see the facade. There were many people here and the temple is worth a visit. A very typical chines temple with lots of red lanterns. Stunning! Beautiful stonework on the floor and magnificent architecture. I really liked it! So colorful!!

Ong Ang walking street

My next and final destination around Bangkok Chinatown was the Ong Ang walking street. How didn’t I come across this spot before? This street is so nice, just along the river canal with such a charming atmosphere with little coffee shops and traditional architecture. Beautifully decorated and clean, so nice for a walk!!! Shamefully I only went there by the end of the day and many things were already closed, but it seemed like a lively street during the day. I recommend a visit here, so peaceful!- my camera ran out of battery so no pictures 🙁

And this is where my day ended. I walked km and km around Bangkok Chinatown and the surroundings and was super tired.

There are too many temples around this area, but I decided to check Wat Sam Pluem or Wat Chakrawatrachawat Woramahawihan which has many beautiful buildings and a pond with very big crocodiles that I watched for several minutes.

I used the public bus to go back from Bangkok Chinatown to my place cause local buses in Bangkok are very cheap, and cheaper than the BTS. I remember sometimes paying as low as 7bhat for a ticket. Plus there is a bus map app that tells if the bus is far away or not and can tell you which busses should you take to reach a certain destination. Download the app ViaBus – live transit and map that is very handy.
