During the stay in Phi Phi islands, is mandatory a visit to Ko Phi Phi Lee, the place where the most famous beach in Thailand is based: Maya Bay.
Maya Bay was the set of the “Beach” movie with Leonardo DiCaprio and I believe that due to it this place is really touristic. As the stay in Phi Phi Islands is in Phi Phi Don, I did the day tour that included a trip to Monkey Beach, Ko Phi Phi Lee, Maya Bay, and Viking Cave. I paid for a ticket to the Plankton sunset tour also.
We left the Island after lunch and came back after the sunset, but we weren’t lucky with the weather for this day. First stop is the Monkey Beach, and you can guess why the name. There is a beach hidden among the Limestone cliffs, a beach where you can’t get much space for sunbaths, but with the most beautiful blue water tone ever. We stop a while for a dive and interact with the monkeys that are aggressive. Be careful! They were trying to bite some tourists that were getting closer.
After Monkey beach we go to Maya Bay. The view on the way among the limestone cliffs is wonderful. This is such a magnificent place! But unfortunately, I stayed on the long tail boat along with a few more people because you need to pay a ridiculous fee to put your feet off the boat. Basically, I can get the same view as the others that paid, but they had 1 hour to walk on the beach filled with tourists and I don’t. Actually, on the boat, we created the theory that this fee to Maya Bay beach is a scam. There is absolutely no one to control tickets and basically, we just couldn’t get off the boat because the boat driver said we couldn’t. It is a lot of money to get your feet on the sand…
After staying in the boat admiring the surrounding beauty, we went snorkeling in Maya Bay and it was the best spot where I have snorkeled in Thailand. The water is so clear that you can see a lot of fishes over a long distance. This was my favorite snorkeling spot so far.
After this, the sea was getting very agitated, so our guides told us that we won’t be going to another place because of the bad weather. Of course, as this had happened to me once before, I thought they were making an excuse again. We headed to Pileh Lagoon that is a breathtaking place. It has the most beautiful water ever and as it was hidden from the waves, we stand there for a while until things get calmer. This place has a mesmerizing view surrounded by cliffs. What a piece of Heaven.
When the sea was supposed to be calmer, we get out of the Lagoon and head to the Viking Cave. We stop for a few minutes for some pictures and that’s it. It is a cave on a limestone cliff looking awesome with stalactites and stalagmites.
Well, the sea is getting really agitated and kind of scary, we are hitting the waves so strong that we were actually thinking that the boat will dismantle. We start seeing the other touristic boats where everyone as a life jacket on, so we do the same. I couldn’t keep my eyes open for a second with so much water coming inside. The lady on the boat was screaming like we were on a roller coaster, and it actually looked like it. The noise the boat is doing everytime we hit the water is becoming scary. This was a very troubled boat ride. The most complicated ever! But it was so much fun seeing that lady screaming so loud. We were all laughing a lot on the boat.
Due to this weather conditions, I wasn’t able to see the luminescent Plankton and the extra money I paid for it isn’t returned. This was one of the things to do in Phi Phi islands I was more excited about, so I was really sad we weren’t able to do it that day as I won’t have any other chance. You can only see this spectacle when there is the sunset and this day there was no sunset for us.
The day in Phi Phi Islands turned out to be very fun and the views were worthy of a dream.
