Khao San road is the most popular nightlife street in Bangkok for tourists. By the night the street is full of people, mostly tourists, and the restaurants you see on the street during the day, are kind of transformed into open air disco’s and bars with loud music so everyone stands on the road enjoying the surrounding ambiance and craziness.
There is a lot going on the street. This is where you will find the fried scorpions, tarantulas and other insects that aren’t appealing, at least for me. The tourists challenge each other to check which one is the braves and eats a crusty insect. My group was about 10 people and 1 scorpion was enough for all haha. I just tried the tip of a leg that is so crunchy that it has no taste. But I believe the flavor is on the body and not on the tail.
There are old ladies selling very sassy inscriptions on bracelets and selling some fun souvenirs. You can find street food on the road and drinks are available in each “bar”. There is plenty offer of massages, Ping Pong shows and Lady Boys are all over. If you don’t know, in Thailand it seems like a trend that guys dress and behave like girls seems to be cool, trendy, and the street is full of Divas.
Of course, you will find people so wasted that they are doing the stupidest things on earth, and in the middle of such a hustle and bustle, you need to be careful with your belongings otherwise they will disappear in the night just like mine. But I was stupid. I will describe my case so you can act wiser than me.
The first and only time I had my things stolen during this trip was on Khao San road. In fact, there was just one mistake: carry my bag on my back. Yeah, not clever. While I was dancing surrounded with people in a crazy happy mood, I had my things stolen by some bad intentioned people that I believe might be walking around solo with that purpose as they know the tourists are dancing and not paying much attention to things like this. Even if your belongings aren’t in your back, you need to be careful of pickpockets as they are around this touristic attraction with bad intentions.
Fortunately, I’m not carrying a lot of money with me and I always leave the important things on the Hostel locker. That’s the best thing you can do.
As my hostel was very near Khao San road, we were all gathering there to go together having fun. We had a really cool group of people from different countries that just met and hanged out together, and it is super cool. We were going to the street every night, but this isn’t a backpacker life. Drinks here are about the same price as in Portugal so things weren’t cheap for my pocket. You can spend a lot of money on parties and that’s not my main goal during this trip.
This was the reason why Thailand got out of my budget.
